Five American soldiers killed in Iraq

Five American soldiers were killed in two separate operations. One was in the southern parts of the capital Baghdad and the second in the outskirt of Tikrit, north of Baghdad.

In a statement, the American army announced that four of the soldiers were killed on Monday in a booby trapped car explosion targeting a check point where they were stationed south of Baghdad.

Earlier, one American soldier was killed in a bomb explosion targeting their procession in al-Doura area near Tikrit, north of Baghdad. Two American soldiers and one Iraqi translator were injured in the attack.

The American army also announced on Monday the killing of its first soldier in the military operation known as "the iron curtain" which has been continuous for the third running day in al-Huseibah town which adjoins the Iraqi- Syrian borders.

The New York Times correspondent who escorts the American forces said that three American soldiers were injured during this operation.
