Libya, Culture, 11/7/2005
The official Libyan News agency reported today that "In line with the efforts of the General Department for Fighting Narcotics and Mental Effectors in order to eradicate the drug plague and wiping it out from society the department sources at the General People's Committee for Public Security said its members managed during Eid al-Fitre to catch a gang that used (Libya) as a warehouse transit and distribution area for this dangerous plague."
It said that the authorities "confiscated quantities of hashish in its possession estimated at 1800 kg which members of the gang tried to distribute within and outside" Libya.
The official news agency said "It is to be noted that (Libya) attached great importance to fighting narcotics and mental effects and considered them as WMD (weapons of mass destruction) when peoples Basic Congresses passed law no 7 for 1990 and its amended law no 19 for 2001 on fighting drugs which provided for entrusting the competent authorities to follow up drug traffickers and punishing them to wipe out this phenomenon."
