Cruise ship escapes hijack near Somali coast
Somalia, Local, 11/7/2005
Andrew Mongora, the official in the Kenyan program to help sailors, said that the attempt to highjack a tourism ship off the Somali coasts threatens the tourism industry in the area.
He said that working in this area of waters off the Somali territorial waters is like work in awar zone.
These statements came one day after the survival of a tourism ship registered in Bahamas islands, and had on its board 600 European tourists, from a high jacking attempt off the Somali coasts.
The ship which was heading to Mombassa port in Kenya was attacked by armed men who were on board of three boats, but the tourism ship fled away and avoided the gunmen who opened fire at it.
This high jacking incident is number 33 against various types of ships to take place off the Somali coasts since mid March this year, according to the international naval office which recommends ships to stay as far as possible from the coast.
