US studies imposing sanctions on Sudan
Sudan-USA, Politics, 11/5/2005
The US representative at the UN, John Bolton, called for imposing sanctions on Sudan accusing its government of being the source of violence in Darfur.
Bolton said that security has deteriorated in Darfur area despite the fact that peace keeping soldiers of the African Union are stationed there, adding that this situation requires from the UN to study the imposition of sanctions on Sudanese officials.
The US representative considered that the situation in Darfur is the source of great concern for the America President George Bush and the US secretary of state Condaleezza Rice, noting that he expected new measures to be endorsed shortly to improve the security condition there.
Bolton complained recently that the UN Security Council listened to repeated reports on the crisis of Darfur but did not take any related measure.
Actually the UN Security Council threatened sides outside the Sudanese government, including the rebel groups outside Darfur, and the Janjawied militias, with sanctions, but so far no measures has been taken to this effect.
