Israeli-Greek maneuvers in the presence of Arab observers
Regional-Israel, Politics, 11/2/2005
Israeli forces took part, in the presence of observers from five Arab states on Tuesday participated with the Greek forces in training on relief operations and rescuing victims south of Greece.
Israeli and Greek rescue military forces carried out search exercises for survivals of a collapsed building as a result of an earthquake and drowning trade ships, in the presence of 10 military observers from Egypt, Jordan, Algeria, Morocco and Tunis. The exercise was attended by 110 military men and 35 Israeli relief members.
The Greek army chief said that "this is a step forward in the regional cooperation operation," adding that the "two main objectives of the training is to provide humanitarian and relief aids from catastrophe."
In a statement, the Greek ministry of defense said that the training aims at ensuring a quick reaction to a catastrophic situation, through providing humanitarian aids and carrying out search and relief operations.
Worthy mentioning that the 6 countries are part of the "Mediterranean dialogue group" which was established in 1994. However it remained ineffective and had not a military operation in the past. Leaders of NATO announced in a meeting in Istanbul on June 29, 2004 to raise the group to the level of its main partner.
