Iranian view on its regional role
Regional-Iran, Politics, 10/31/2005
Iran cannot be affected by US unilateral policies, Commander of the Islamic Revolution's Guard Corps (IRGC) Major General Yahya Rahim Safavi said Sunday, the official news agency reported.
IRNA reported: Safavi was speaking at a ceremony marking the martyrdom anniversary of Hossein Fahmideh and 36,000 student Basijis (volunteer forces).
"Iran is in the center of three strategic and sensitive regions -- Middle East, Central Asia and the Caucasus. The Islamic Republic, for this reason, can play a decisive role in regional political, economic, cultural and security arrangements," he said.
He pointed to Iran's sensitive, complicated and strategic position in regional and global affairs, and added, "The country's statesmen, intellectuals and Basij youth are on full alert to defend the national interests through a proper understanding of this role." Shifting to the role of Iran in ensuring security in the Middle East region, the IRGC commander added, "Iran, which has joint borders with Iraq and Afghanistan, cannot be impassive to regional developments." "The Americans must know that Iran's cultural, political and security position in the region cannot be ignored.
"Iran is the center of gravity of one of the biggest interconnecting networks in the world and acts as a bridge for international communications between West, East and North and South and between the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea.
"Iran calls for positive and constructive interaction with members of the international community. The Islamic Republic, in the heart of the Middle East, cannot be adversely affected by US unilateral policies."
