Washington, Paris for strong resolution against Syria
Syria-Lebanon-USA, Politics, 10/29/2005

Both the USA and France said that they are confident that the UN Security Council will adopt a strong draft formula against Syria over the file of the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, during the session to be held on Monday at the level of foreign ministers, while China and Russia have reservations about such action.

The draft resolution which was circulated by the two countries together with Britain threatens to impose economic sanctions on Damascus if it does not fully collaborate with the UN investigation committee to the assassination of Hariri. The draft resolution calls for embargoing the travel and freezing assets of persons involved in this operation.

The US representative at the UN John Bolton said that the sides concerned have approached the finalization of an agreement on the formula of the draft resolution, adding that this draft will be ready for discussion on Monday. He explained that the draft resolution got nine votes which is enough to endorse it if it is not vetoed.

It does not seem that Russia and china who have the right to veto had agreed to the threats to impose economic sanctions on Syria, while the Algerian representative, the only Arab member in the council, indicated that talking about sanctions is premature and unjustified because the investigations is still ongoing.
