Mubarak appoints new army chief of staff

The Egyptian state run al-Akhbar daily said on Wednesday that the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak appointed a new army chief of staff within the course of new appointments in the leadership of the Egyptian army.

The paper said that Mubarak appointed Lt. Gen. Sami Annan who had the post of the commander of the defense air force to succeed Lt. Gen. Hamdi Wahibah in the post which is considered the second highest in the Egyptian army after the post of the defense minister.

The paper indicated that Wahibah will be appointed as a chief for the Arab commission for manufacturing, the largest establishment for military equipments, owned by the Egyptian government.

The paper added that Mubarak will issue other decisions of new appointments in the army within the few coming days, within a series of periodic appointments often made in the lines of the Egyptian military leadership.
