UN chief: Lebanon detained Palestinians infiltrated from Syria
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 10/27/2005

The UN secretary general Kofi Annan said that the Lebanese forces started a campaign to prevent the flow of weapons and persons from Syria to the armed groups in Lebanon, in the course of implementing UN Security Council resolutions no. 1559 which calls for the dismantling of weapons of the armed groups.

A report by Annan prepared in line of a report drawn by Terry Rod Larsen, the UN special delegate on the implementation of UN resolution 1559, said that the prime minister notified the UN that the Lebanese armed forces started a campaign against the flow of weapons and persons from Syria to the armed groups in Lebanon.

Annan's report testified to the UN Security Council the "recent various reports that indicate that there is an increase in the flow of weapons and persons from Syria to some of these groups."

The report added that the Lebanese government notified the UN that the Lebanese armed forces detained in this course several Palestinians carrying Syrian IDs.

Also Annan confirmed in his report that the Syrian government notified him that the the smuggling of weapons and people via the Syrian- Lebanese borders "is actually taking place but in both directions."

Annan's report concluded that the armed groups defy the authority of the Lebanese government and are in contradiction with honoring Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.
