Arab- Russian opposition to sanctions on Syria
Syria-Regional-Russia, Politics, 10/27/2005
The Arab League announced it opposes the imposition of sanctions against Syria according to accusations on which investigations are still incomplete. It said that it sees no legitimacy nor logic in imposing such sanctions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Arab League warned against the consequences of attitudes conducive to taking it for granted in imposing sanctions, and find in that negative inclination to the already established problems in the region dark shadows on the Middle East region.
The AL also appreciated what was announced by Syria on total cooperation with the UN investigation committee to the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri, and its support to what is demanded by all on the need to punish the persons accused in committing the assassination of al-Hariri immediately if their involvement in this crime is proved.
For its part, Russia said it will spare no efforts to prevent the UN issuance of any sanctions against Syria on the background of the report of the chairman of the UN investigation committee Detlev Mehlis on the assassination of al- Hariri.
The spokesman for the Russian foreign ministry Mikhael Kaminin said in statements quoted by the Russian mass media that the Russian foreign minister Sergy Lavrov will seek to make sure that the resolution expected to be issued against Syria during the meeting of the UN Security Council next week will be balanced and objective.
