Mehlis call for a Syrian initiated investigation
Syria-Lebanon-UN, Politics, 10/26/2005
The chief of the UN investigation team into the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister, judge Detlive Mehlis said that the committee's report is final and need more time to be completed.
In a meaningful sign to Syria, the UN investigator said that the completion of investigations by the committee is but an opportunity for Syria to show further cooperation with the committee, calling on it to make its own investigation so as to be able to answer the questions that remained unsolved in the report of the investigation committee.
Mehlis disclosed for the first time that his committee received threats, considering that this enhances its credibility. But he did not disclose these threats nor its source.
However, the Lebanese representative at the UN and acting secretary for the Lebanese foreign ministry Butrous Asakar who attended the session, welcomed extension for the work of the UN investigation committee until the mid of December.
