Regional views supporting Syria on accusations of Mehlis report
Regional-Syria, Politics, 10/26/2005
Egyptian newspaper al-Akhbar denounced on Tuesday "claims and sayings," repeated by some Lebanese newspapers over Syria.
In a column, the paper noted that the timing of repeating these claims is a " conspiratorial fatal timing," that came a few hours before the UN Security Council session on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.
"Does the riot making in Lebanon and provocation against Syria as well pushing the situation to be deteriorated in Egypt by raising sectarianism come in the framework of the so called policy of creative chaos that some has talked about in Washington," the paper asked.
Meantime, Emirates newspaper al-Bayan has depicted the UN report on assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Al-Hariri as a "weak play fabricated on the western American style."
The paper noted that the committee lacked any tangible evidences and depended on personal opinions and judgments as it was far from being professional.
"The UN committee was the victim of the US and Israeli pressures to oblige it to accuse Syria due to her pan-Arab firm stances and her rejection of war on Iraq," the paper said in a commentary.
The Kuwaiti al-Rai al-Aam newspaper on Tuesday said that the report of the international investigation committee into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri failed to present a convincing vision of killing Hariri.
In a comment written by Kuwaiti University Academic Jasem al-Faheid, the paper added that the report is based on guesses and suspicions.
The paper pointed out that the report granted the US a 'new stick' to lean on increasing its pressures and campaign against Syria.
The daily called for seeing pressures of the American administration against Syria through the US pre-planned schemes to restructure the "Middle East House", in addition to the American attempts to impose its own vision on the region in a way that serves its targets.
In another comment by the Kuwaiti writer Amena al-Mussawi, the paper described the report as a "deformed embryo which comes out of the politicizing womb," asserting that the report lacks credibility and is built on suspicions.
For its part, United Arab Emirates al-Bayan newspaper described the report as "a weak play fabricated on the American way."
In a comment published today, the paper said the report is full of phrases like "'it seems; it is obvious; it is hard to imagine; probably and maybe.' This indicates that the committee lacks any tangible evidence and that the report is based on personal conclusions," it added.
The paper underlined that the testimony of the so-called "witness king" in fact turned out to be a "perjury", undermining the whole report.
It went on questioning "why the report completely excluded Israel, although it is the first and only beneficiary from this event? Israel is the only side which possess the articles of this complicated crime, while Syria is the side who was most hurt by this crime," it said.
Secretary General of the People's Unity Party in Tunisia Mohammed Busheha criticized Mehlis report and said the whole report is contradictory and is similar to a memo rather than a judicial investigation.
Bousheha indicted in a statement overnight that the report is far from objectivity and the honesty. "It aims at legitimating the American flagrant intervention in the Arab region under international cover and a recommendation of the UN Security Council," he added.
Bousheha called upon the Arab states to voice solidarity with Syria and standing in the face of the fierce attack against Damascus as this would be targeted against all the Arab states as well.
