Egypt: Lack of movement on the peace road sends wrong message to Palestinians
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 10/25/2005

Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak met Monday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and asserted that Egypt would support the Palestinian Authority in its attempt to settle all the Gaza-related outstanding issues particularly the cross points, the safe passage between Gaza and the West Bank and ways of implementing the Roadmap plan for peace in the Middle East.

Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Suleman Awwad said President Mubarak promised to hold contacts with a number of regional and international powers, over discussing those issues.

Answering a question on whether Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz would visit Egypt soon, Ambassador Awwad said that President Mubarak has invited Mofaz to come to Cairo for consultations. He indicated that the date of the visit was not yet fixed but it would take place soon.

Ambassador Awwad said Egypt and President Mubarak believe that the momentum created by Israel's withdrawal from Gaza should be built upon.

Awwad said President Mubarak warned that the Palestinian people would be getting the wrong message should there be no movement towards implementing the Roadmap plan for peace.

Ambassador Awwad said that the Palestinian President's handling of the situation on the ground is as wise as can be expected, and that he has good relations with all Palestinians.

The Palestinian president, said Awwad, briefed President Mubarak on the situation on the ground and the contacts he intends to hold following his return to the Palestinian territories in order to support peace among Palestinian factions and enhance Egypt's efforts to host a new round of inter-factional dialogue in Cairo soon.
