Reactions criticizing the Mehlis report
Regional-Syria, Politics, 10/25/2005
French L'Humanite newspaper criticized the report of the UN international investigation into the assassination of Lebanese former Premier Rafiq Hariri, saying that the report raises a number of questions instead of uncovering facts.
"Pressure on Syria unveil Washington's hostile intentions against Damascus as well as the US strategic project to create a greater Middle Eastern region to be under its direct control," the newspaper said in an article published Monday.
Chairman of the Arab-French Solidarity Association Luciene Bitterlin, for his part, said the report didn't imply Syrian involvement in the assassination, wondering "what is the interest of Syria to commit such an act."
"The report doesn't include anything but mere accusations and hypotheses without any evidence... there is not any real indication or material factor that points an accusation finger against Syria," Bitterlin said in a statement in Paris.
Meanwhile, Algeria, who holds the rotating presidency of the Arab League, expressed concern over threats Syria is exposed to, particularly after the release of the UN investigator Detlev Mehils report.
"This issue is very complicated... our country is pursuing with great concern those accusations," Algerian State Minister and the Representative of Algerian President Abdullaziz Belkhadem told a radio station.
In Cairo "al-Jumhorea" and "al-Ahram" Newspapers strongly condemned the Mehlis report, saying that this report is full of ambiguous, incorrect and contradictory points. The two newspapers, in their articles, called on Arab states "to show solidarity with Syria to foil conspiracies being hatched in the dark against Damascus."
