Senior Lebanese officials criticize Mehlis report
Lebanon-Syria, Politics, 10/24/2005

Lebanese Member of Parliament Marwan Fares has described the report of the international investigation Committee on the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri as a political report "which aims at putting pressures on Syria due to its legitimate and firm stances."

In a statement to reporters on Saturday, Fares said there is a political campaign and severe pressure on Syria which have emerged from the UN resolution No. 1559 and the report of the international investigations committee.

For his part, Head of Lebanese al-Najad Party Mustafa al-Hakim said the report is incomplete and full of gaps and is lacking evidence. He added that the report aims at besieging Syria and imposing sanctions on it to force Syria to make it offer concessions in its political positions.

Meanwhile, Executive Deputy of the Secretary General of Lebanese Hisbullah Party Hussein al-Mussawi called for presenting evidence on which the report conclusions are based. He called on the Lebanese people to unify their ranks in facing the critical situation that Lebanon is passing through.
