Two ships collide in Suez Canal killing two, injuring 30
Egypt, Local, 10/18/2005

News reports in Cairo said that two Egyptians were killed and other 30 injured following a collision on Monday evening between one Egyptian ship carrying Egyptian ( Minor Omra) pilgrims coming from Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and a Cypriot container ship at the entrance of the Suez Gulf.

The collision took place while the Egyptian "peace 95" ship was waiting its turn in the row to enter the Suez Canal, while the Cypriot ship which was coming from the Mediterranean has crossed the Canal heading towards the Red Sea.

The Egyptian "peace ship" was carrying 1343 Egyptians, 4 Palestinians and 120 members of its crew. The Egyptian minister of transport Issam Sharaf announced rescuing all passengers before the Egyptian ship had sunk, stressing that the two killed persons were one man and one woman.

The governor of Suez, Seif Rddine Jalal, said that the navigation movement in the Canal was not affected by the incident, which took place outside its navigation course.
