Oti will not visit Damascus; Lebanon is progressing
Regional-European Union, Politics, 10/14/2005

The European envoy for the Middle East peace process Marc Oti denied after his meeting with the Egyptian foreign minister Ahmad Abul Gheit in Cairo his readiness to visit Syria at the meantime, saying that "it is inappropriate to visit Damascus at the meantime."

The European official was asked about his assessment of the situation in Lebanon and Syria and he said that "for the situation in Lebanon we have a clear plan for the implementation of the UN Security Council resolution 1559, which we expect," adding that "the second part which we work for is re-building of Lebanon via constitutional democratic establishment and reviewing economic conditions." he said that the "the Lebanese train is moving in a positive direction," noting the importance of convening the donor conference to encourage investment in Lebanon.

Oti explained that his visit to Cairo came in conclusion of a tour in which he visited each of Jerusalem, Ramullah and Amman and will be followed by other visits.
