Shara-Statement on Kanaan assassination
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 10/14/2005
Syria's Foreign Minister Farouk al-Shara said on Thursday said that some media and what was leaked from the UN Investigation Committee investigating into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri unjustly contributed to the death of Syrian minister Ghazi Kanaan.
In a statement to reporters during the funeral of Kanaan, al-Shara added that "there are some media establishment that do not learn or get benefit from the course of events and some of them contributed to the death of Kanaan," wondering how can these media continue to drive accusations against Syria.
He added that Chairman of the UN Investigation Committee, Detlev Mehlis has earlier promised to deny all that which did not take place in his meeting with the Syrian officials, as alleged by the media, and therefore Syria is waiting for Mehlis to reply back to allegations of the Lebanese media channels made on the eve of Kanaan's death.
He expressed hope that the media will get benefit from this bitter experience and maintain their credibility and objectivity.
