Kanaan committed suicide, final investigations say

First Attorney General in Damascus, Mohammad Marwan al-Lowaji, stressed Thursday that the late Interior Minister, Ghazi Kanaan, died by committing suicide when he shot himself using his personal pistol at his office yesterday morning.

"General Kanaan was still alive when he entered the intensive care unit at al-Shami Hospital... he was treated for half an hour, later he passed away of his wounds," Lowaji said in a press conference along with Director of Interior Minister Office and Chairman of the Medical Examining Center in Damascus.

"Medical technical experts who have made investigations into the corpse underlined that the death happened as a result of suicide... they have proven through criminal evidence that General Kanaan shot himself in the mouth using his personal gun," the Attorney General added.

Lowaji, along with the Interior Minister's Office Director and the Medical Examiner answered the journalists' questions. The Office Director said that General Kanaan was normal when he arrived in his office yesterday morning... and he signed some official papers as usual.

"Moments later, the Minister left his office and went to his house in al-Malki Street, he stayed there for nearly 5 minutes... then he came back to his office," the Director said.
