Agreement over the Iraqi constitution
Iraq, Politics, 10/13/2005
In an important political development, the Iraqi President Jalal al-Talibani on Wednesday announced that the main Iraqi sides have reached an agreement which he described as historic, that allows for making constitutional changes that meet the demands of the Arab Sunnis, following the legislative elections due in mid December.
President Talibani stressed that the agreement leaves no room for any one to reject the constitution, noting that the proposed changes were agreed to by each of the United Iraqi Coalition, the Iraqi List and the Kurdistani Alliance, and this is for "meeting the demands set by the Arab Sunnis."
For his part, the chairman of the Shiite United Coalition, Abdul Aziz al-Hakim, said that the coalition agreed to the changes on the principle of maintaining national unity and bringing view points together for the interests of the Iraqi people and for "isolating terrorism."
For his part, the former Iraqi President Ghazi Ojeil Elyawer said that "this agreement is the best that we can reach," expressing his conviction that there was no justification that people reacted negatively towards the constitution.
