Syria, Culture, 10/10/2005

Damascus is quite famous for its popular old markets, (souqs), Kuwaiti News Agency KUNA underlined in a reportage on Sunday, touching upon beauty of the covered historical markets which Damascus embraces.

"Damascus old markets are distinguished and specialized ones such as al Al-Hamidieh, Madhat Basha, Al-Buzurieh, the Handicradts markets in addition to and Khan Asaad Basha which was built in the mid-19th century." The report said adding that these markets have been in existence since hundreds of years till nowadays.

The khan provides a place for the exchange of goods, storage of merchandise and temporary residential units.

Each khan was specialized both in terms of the commodity traded and the nature of the visitor, whether foreign merchants or a traveling caravan.

The most famous markets in Damascus are Al-Hamidieh market (souq). It is one of the most famous and attractive souqs in the world with its constant show of traditional arts.

Al-Buzurieh Souq is famous for its eastern spices and the local confectionaries.

The Handicradts Souq is located in the small Al-Takya building, contains all of Syria's most famous handicrafts: Glass-blowing, wood carving, carpet and textile weaving, articles made from Damascene silk, and hand made silver and gold Jewellery. Madhat Basha Souq, Al-Salhia and al-Hamra are also famous Damascene markets.
