New judicial reforms introduced in Syria
Syria, Judicial, 10/6/2005

Syria's Justice Minister, Mohammed Jaafari, said that the four legislative decrees issued by President Bashar al-Assad yesterday were an expression of the president's care given to judges and jurisdiction with the aim of ensuring the preeminence of justice in the society.

He added in a statement to reporters that such legislation is considered as a big achievement for judges because they take into consideration improvement of the judge's standard of living that should reflect positively on the judicial procedures in service of the citizens. He stressed that the measures taken to raise the salaries of the judges should serve as a catalyst for them to do a better job.

Measures of increasing Judges' salaries can be seen as a motivation for judges to do the best job possible, and reduces the temptations for bribery and corruption in the judicial system.

He pointed out that Legislative Decree No. 95 which includes firing a number of judges, is considered an achievement in the service of justice.

He indicated that his ministry and the Higher Judiciary Council will monitor the quality of work of the judges in Syria on a daily basis.
