Mauritania's new ruler: we will not review relations with Israel
Mauritania-Israel, Politics, 10/1/2005

The chairman of the "military council for justice and democracy" that rules Mauritania, Ali Weld Muhammad Faal, stressed in an interview for the Jeune Afrique L' Intelligence to be published on Monday, that his country will not re-consider ending diplomatic relations with Israel and Washington.

He added that the members of the council will quit the authority in 2007 without taking part in the elections with which the interim phase will end.

Faal added that his country will not reconsider relations it had established in 1999 with Israel, adding that the new authorities in Mauritania intends to keep "these good relations which Mauritania holds with Washington."

Faal said that relations with Israel would continue and " we will not backtrack this decision, rather I am sure that everyone and all will be confident of establishing such relations."

Faal explained " that since 1947 until the Oslo agreement, the confrontation policy resulted in no service for the Palestinian issue," considering that the Palestinians "involved freely in the negotiation and dialogue operation with Israel, and therefore we pursue this direction similar to other Arab countries."

On the other hand, Faal indicated a new law that will ban the council's 17 member, including himself as well as members of the government, from nominating themselves to the next presidential elections.
