Syria to the UN: Israel's statement on the Golan against peace
Syria-Israel-UN, Politics, 10/1/2005

Syria has stressed that the dangerous and provocative statements of some Israeli officials in which they have stressed their determination to keep the Syrian Golan under the Israeli control forever are contradicting the international law and the relevant UN. resolutions.

Syria's Permanent Representative at the United Nations, Faisal Mekdad said in a message sent to UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan, and to Chairman of the UN. Security Council that such hostile statements came at a time "when the international community is looking for easing tension and for the establishment of just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East."

He added that "such statements constitute a flagrant challenge to the UN Charter and to the sovereignty of international Law, stressing that the UN Security Council resolution 497 for the year 1981 indicates the illegality of the acquisition of land by force in line with the principles of the United Nations and decided that the Israeli authority on Golan is considered illegal."

He indicated that over half a million Syrian citizens have been displaced by force since the June aggression of 1967 from Golan in order to be replaced by settlers, and those who remained under the Israeli occupation are determined to liberate the occupied territories and to return to their homeland.

Meqdad appealed to the international community and to the UN Security Council and the member countries to condemn the Israeli policies and to "demand Israel to abandon its expansionist and settlement policies."

He expressed hope that this message will be circulated as a document of the UN. General Assembly and of the UN Security Council.
