Fatah wins municipal elections in the West bank
Palestine, Politics, 9/30/2005
Preliminary results for the third phase of the Palestinian municipal elections in the occupied West Bank resulted in the winning of the Palestine liberation movement Fatah, led by the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Official for the local elections committee Adnan Samarh said that the Fatah movement achieved "a great victory by getting more than 60% of the votes in the municipal and village elections which took place on Thursday after counting all votes."
The elections included 104 villages but voting only took place in 82 villages because the results were already decided in the other 22 villages because one list only nominated itself (unchallenged) for the elections. Samarah said that the rate of participation exceeded 70%.
The first and second phase of the elections took place in December 2004 and May 2005 while the fourth phase will be held on December 8, 2005 in 107 villages in the West Bank and Gaza.
It is presumed that 127,000 Palestinians will take place in the elections to choose their municipal advisors among 3469 candidates including 596 women on the lists of Fatah, the Islamic resistance movement Hamas or independent organizations.
