Egypt proposes nuclear-free-zone in Middle East
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 9/29/2005

Egypt has proposed the creation of a nuclear-free zone in the Middle East at a Vienna meeting of the UN nuclear watchdog agency.

Egyptian ambassador Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy told the 193-nation general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that "Egypt will be tabling a draft resolution on a nuclear-free zone" and hopes for "a serious international commitment in this area."

Ramzy appealed to IAEA chief Mohamed El Baradei "to continue his efforts to persuade the country which is standing in the way of the creation of such an area to display good will," in a clear reference to Israel.

Israel, said Wednesday it was not against such a zone but that there must first be an overall peace agreement in the Middle East.
