Bush lifts certain some weopons export restrictions on Libya
Libya-USA, Politics, 9/29/2005

The US President George W. Bush lifted certain restrictions in military exports to Libya so as to enable American companies to take part in destroying the storage of the chemical weapons in Tripoli and renovation of 9 passengers planes.

This was, however, another step towards improving relations after Libya had decided in December 2003 to give up its programs related to nuclear, chemical and biological weaponry.

In a memorandum to the US state secretary Condaleezza Rice, Bush said he will lift certain restrictions imposed according to the monitoring law on the American weapons exports, because this serves the US national security interests.

This law restricts the military exports to Libya because the US Department Of State classifies Libya as a terrorism- sponsoring state.

A spokesman for the national security council for the White House said that Bush lifted certain restrictions from the military exports "in order to enable American companies to take part in Libya's program to destroy its storage of chemical weapons."

The spokesman added that this step will also facilitate renovation of 8 passengers planes of C-130 type Libya bought in the 1970s but was not delivered to Tripoli, rather stored in warehouses in the USA.
