Syria calls for building a region free of nuclear weapons
Syria-Regional, Politics, 9/28/2005
Syria called on Tuesday upon the international community to implement international decisions on building a free from nuclear weapons region in the Middle East
General Director of the Atomic Energy Board in Syria Ibrahim Othman told the International Agency for Atomic Energy IAEA 49 session in Vienna that,
" One of the most important resolutions is resolution 487 in 1981 that Israel is ignoring when it follows an oppressive and terror policy against our sons in Palestine and Golan neglecting at the same time all norms and international documents," Othman said.
He deplored the lack of tangible as well practical efforts to subjugate all Israeli nuclear facilities to systems of comprehensive guarantees under the IAEA.
"Israel's singularity in owning nuclear weapons in a region where all states signed the Nuclear Weapons Non- Proliferation Treaty NPT is threatening the regional security in light of security balance absence, and great powers closing their eyes to Israel's violation of all international legitimacy resolutions."
