Lebanese security breaks into phone company in Hariri investigation
Lebanon, Politics, 9/28/2005

The Lebanese security forces detained 8 workers in the MTC Touch corporation for operating mobile telephones following an operation it carried out at the company's headquarters in Beirut on Tuesday in the course of the investigation into the assassination of the former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri.

One security source who asked to be anonymous said that the Lebanese authorities suspect that the detained men worked in changing or removing certain information from the central computer of the company.

The director of the UN media center in Beirut, Najib Freji, explained that the Lebanese judiciary authorized the break-in into the said building at the knowledge of the UN investigation committee into the assassination of Hariri, noting that the results of the operation will be placed at the disposal of the UN committee.

Earlier this month, the government arrested four other persons in this case, and they were accused of falsifying and abstaining from giving information, after selling phone cards believed to have been used in calls carried out on February 14 when Hariri was assassinated. However, judicial sources refused to give details on the relations of the four men to the assassination.

Meanwhile, France announced by its foreign ministry spokesman that it will study "with a spirit of friendship and cooperation" requests from Lebanon in the area of security cooperation.
