Israel arrests Hamas candidates to the elections; breaks into Ramullah
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 9/27/2005
An Israeli army force on Monday broke into the city of Ramullah in the West Bank and recovered the body of a missing Israeli who had been missing for several days and died under unclear conditions.
Security sources said that the military source is composed of 20 jeep cars which were deployed in a field in one of the quarters situated southern west of the city where the body of the Israeli was found. Witnesses said that the Israeli military men left the place with a "large box."
In another development, the Israeli occupation forces detained 90 Palestinian activists from Hamas and the Islamic Jihad movements in the West Bank, according to a spokesman for the Israeli army. Today's acts of arrest came in the course of a campaign started on Sunday that targeted Islamic activists most of them from Hamas movement and several members of the Islamic Jihad movement.
Monday's acts of arrest were circulated on several Palestinian cities and municipalities including Bethlehem in which some 28 Palestinians were arrested and other 34 others were arrested in Hebron, besides other five from Ramullah, according to the Israeli army.
These acts of arrest targeted leading figures in Hamas and its personnel who are candidates for the local commissions and the elections of the next Palestinian legislative council. A matter which is considered an intervention in the Palestinian elections which are due by the beginning of 2006 and an interference in its results before convening it, as the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon had announced one week earlier. Among the detained Palestinian was Hassan Youssef, the leading figure in the movement in the West Bank.
The Palestinian president criticized these acts of arrest. He said while receiving the central elections committee saying "such conditions obstruct or work to impede it," but he simultaneously stressed that the legislative elections will be held in its set time by the beginning of 2006.
