Al-Thawra: Syria refutes Zibari and U.S. accusations as baseless
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 9/24/2005

Syria rebuffed on Friday accusations of Iraq's Foreign Minister as well the U.S President commentary on border control with Syria as "baseless," noting that they come in frame of a pressure campaign on Syria.

"Issuing such statements and accusations that are baseless from time to time has become an uncovered and deplored item," Al-Thawra daily said in a front page commentary.

Hoshiyar Zibari said he felt that there was a lack of political will to Syria towards her commitments, while U.S President George W. Bush said what Syria has done regarding border control is not satisfactory.

The paper said "these allegations do come in frame of pressures and threats against Syria who repeatedly proved that she was the most eager side for the well-being of her brethren in Iraq and everywhere in the Arab world."

It noted that Syria due to her pan-Arab and national positions is keeping her prestige and rank as she would reject to engage in "media and political disputes and rivalries."

The paper underlined that "what is most painful is that repeating such accusations would hurt fraternal ties between the two countries and would contribute to boost a sate of instability in the region while doing at the same time a free service to the Arab nation enemies to facilitate executing their aggressive schemes in the region."

Responding to occupation forces accusations that Syria was not showing a serious cooperation on border issue, the paper asked "what were the procedures taken by Iraq and the forces occupying Iraq on the other side of border?"

"Is border protection a single responsibility or a common task that is basically built on cooperation which meets rejection from the other side of the border; who in turn owns highly supplicated capabilities and refuse to use them as it rejects to provide Syria with needed toold to make efforts exerted in this concern fruitful," the newspaper said.

The paper questioned what was the Iraqi FM looking for from his statements, "was he seeking to torpedo positive statements made by Talbani and Jaafari on ties with Syria, or was he searching to satisfy other foreign parties?"
