Saudi FM accuses US of partitioning Iraq, handing it over to Iran
Saudi Arabia-USA, Politics, 9/22/2005
Saudi Arabia's foreign minister raised the issue about US and UK actions that he said are leading to the break up of Iraq.
In a remarkable development, Saudi Arabia criticized the US policy in Iraq, saying that this policy deepens sectarianism in Iraq to the extend it will hand over the country to Iran. This was expressed in a speech delivered by the Saudi foreign minister prince Saud al-Faisal before the foreign relations council in New York in which he expressed Saudi fears of the partitioning of Iraq after the Iraqi constitution referendum in October.
Al-Faisal said in his speech that the American policy in Iraq deals with the sects in Iraq "as if separated from each other." He added "we are now talking about the Sunnis as if they are a separate entity from the Shiites."
The Saudi foreign minister, instead of this policy, wanted the US to bring together these sects, warning that contrary to that, a civil war will erupt in the country.
Faisal warned that this conflict will lead to the interference of Iran because of its interests in south Iraq which is dominated by the Shiites, and Turkey because of the emergence of a Kurdish entity that enjoys a self rule in the north, and the Arab states in the region.
He added " we have launched together a war to alienate Iran from Iraq after the expulsion of Iraq from Kuwait, and now we are handing over the whole country to Iran, unjustifiably."
He said that the Iranians go to the areas which are secured by the American forces "pay money and establish themselves there, establish police forces, and arm the militias that used to be there. The Iranians are protected while doing that under (the protection of) the British and American forces."
