Mubarak outlines six elements for the United Nations reform
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 9/17/2005
President Mubarak stressed the importance of launching the United Nations reform saying that international efforts and institutional reform of the United Nations must run in parallel with efforts aimed at eliminating terrorism which could undermine international community efforts to establish international peace and security.
This came in the speech of President Mubarak which was read by Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit on his behalf before the United Nations summit which wound up in New York Friday.
The President called on the participating heads of state and governments to launch collective efforts for dealing with the issue of terrorism on the premise that no single country can confront this phenomenon alone.
The President also asserted that the presidential elections which were held in Egypt early this month culminated the march of reform in Egypt.
He said that these elections in which ten parties competed for the first time took place within the framework of Egypt's march of political development based on the multiparty system, and expanding the base of participation in the decision making process.
The President outlined Egypt's vision of the United Nations reform as follows:
* Restoring the lost balance between the different UN agencies.
* Organizing the work of the Security Council in a way that gains more transparency and credibility, especially for the African states which have not yet got a fair share of representation in the Security Council.
* Giving a wider role for the social and economic council in drawing up the international court of justice policies.
* Enhancing the role of the International Court of Justice and commitment by all members to the resolution it adopts.
* Supporting a suggestion for setting up a peace committee to serve as an effective means in minimizing national capabilities.
* Expanding the NGOs and international community participation in the United Nations work.
President Mubarak in his speech urged the UN to seriously consider holding a conference on terrorism, Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit told the Middle East News Agency (MENA) Friday.
