Rice rules out resorting to force against Syria
Syria-USA, Politics, 9/17/2005

The US secretary of state Condaleezza Rice ruled out resorting to the military force against Syria. She said this matter is not being considered at the meantime.

Rice said in an interview with Newsweek magazine that President George W. Bush keeps all options open towards Syria, a country which has become isolated at the international scene, as she alleged.

Rice's statements coincided with Syria's announcement of its readiness to cooperate with the American and Iraqi authorities to restore back security and stability to Iraq.

In a statement, the Syrian embassy in Washington said that Damascus is making great effort to close its borders with Iraq, and it strongly deplores the explosions which resulted in killing and injuring hundreds in Baghdad last Wednesday.

The statement added that in these crucial times, Syria desires to recall its position which calls for the unity of the Iraqi people, ensure stability and security in Iraq, noting that Syria reiterates determination to spare no efforts to cooperate with the American and Iraqi authorities to reach these objectives.

On Tuesday, the US President George W. Bush warned Syria that it may face more isolation because of its inability to monitor the entry of what he called extremist activists to Iraq via its borders.

The American ambassador in Baghdad gave a similar warning to Syria stressing that US patience towards Syria ended, noting that all options are being considered including the military option.
