al-Thawra: Syrian-Lebanese water cooperation

"The Syrian-Lebanese Water Committee is to resume deliberations on Thursday to discuss the stages of establishing a dam on the River Orontes in Lebanon and another on the Syrian Southern Great River according to an agreement between the two sides to ensure the necessary credits equally," The Syrian daily al-Thawra said Tuesday.
The joint committee is studying project to carry out a joint project on the two rivers to protect water from pollution in cooperation with the donor countries. The storage capacity of River Orontes is up to 37 million cubic meters to meet needs of drinking water and the current and future irrigation projects.
The dam will irrigate about 660 hectare, produce 52 million Kilowatt of electricity and distribute Orontes waters between the two states.
"The Syrian-Lebanese Committee is to meet in Damascus to agree on how to carry out dam on the Southern Great River which can store 80 million cubic meters. The Syrian side will allocate up to $ 625,000 to carry out the dam, Minister of Irrigation Nadir al-Bunni said.
Bunni added that the agreement signed between Syria and Lebanon to share waters of the two rivers as an example in applying the international law on water for non-navel aims, pointing out that the agreement is done in accordance with the criteria of the UN Treaty on International Waters based on a just sharing of waters.
