Lahoud heads for NY
Lebanon-UN, Politics, 9/13/2005
The Lebanese President Emil Lahoud left Beirut for New York in order to take part in the works of the UN General Assembly world summit despite the objections of the Lebanese parliamentary majority which stands against Syria.
Lahoud is accompanied in his trip by his wife Andre and the ministers of foreign affairs Fawzi Salloukh and the justice minister Charles Rizq in addition to an administrative, security and media delegation composed of 70 persons.
News reports said that the Lebanese prime minister refused to accompany Lahoud and recommended him to cancel his travel, considering that the president will not be well-received in New York considering the developments over the investigation of the assassination of Rafiq al-Hariri.
The American ambassador in Lebanon Geoffrey Feldman announced in statements to the Lebanese LBC TV that the US administration will not invite Lahoud to take part in a reception carried out for leaders taking place in New York Summit.
According to the Lebanese foreign ministry, the expected meetings for President Lahoud on the sideline of his visit to New York so far includes only two meetings with his Iranian and Bosnian counterparts.
The Lebanese minister of justice Charles Rizq who is known for his close relations with Lahoud suspected the importance of Lahoud's visit to New York when he said that " he is against this visit but he is only taking part in its because of his friendship with Lahoud."
However, on an unexpected gesture, the Lebanese President called on the foreign ministry t facilitate the visit of Saad eddine al-Hariri- chairman of al-Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc, the major parliamentary bloc in the new Lebanese parliament, the greatest opposer to President Lahoud- to New York.
