God, synagogues and occupation
Palestine-Israel, Editorial, 9/12/2005
Israel has ended its occupation of the Palestinian area know as the Gaza Strip. This, after some 38 years of brutal military occupation. But Israel is leaving behind Synagogues, and the Palestinian are so hurt from all these years of occupation, that they do not want to see any remnant of such occupation.
The Palestinians want to demolish the Synagogues, to erase this ugly phase of history that they had suffered so much from. To have these feelings is understandable, but the question is "is this the right thing to do?"
Destroying these places of worship would be the wrong thing to do, for many reasons. But the most important reason, is that these temples should be maintained in excellent shape for history's sake, as a standing memorial of modern man, and his understanding of life and god.
The Israeli Jews, so-called god's chosen people, allege that god gave them these lands that they so brutally occupied. Now, the Israelis and their supporters have to explain to themselves, why god has just ejected them out of Gaza. Let the synagogues stand forever as monuments to those who claim to understand what god is and what he wants.
As, for the Palestinians, let them keep these sites as places of worship to Jews, an open and well-cared for place of worship, to remember and see what they had done in the name of religion. And let the Palestinians benefit from tourism of these cites. Israel owes the Palestinians much in material compensation. But the Palestinians, need to learn to capitalize on their pain as the Jews have so well done.
Meantime, for those who are attached to God and his will, they need to think about this: if God seems willing to compromise on Gaza and his promises, who knows what else he is willing to compromise on.
