Demonstration of protest against Mubarak
Egypt, Politics, 9/12/2005

In the center of Cairo, a massive demonstration took on Saturday evening the streets organized by the Egyptian movement for the change known as "Kefaya" ( enough).

The demonstration of some 2000 persons took the streets of the capital and the demonstrators chanted slogans against Mubarak and raised banners announcing rejection to the results of the elections.

The demonstrators carried banners, one of which said that Mubarak is ruling Egypt at the consent of only 19% of the voters. A rate which does not give legitimacy to govern the country.

The demonstrators also launched balloons on which slogans were written saying "no for inheritance," in remarks to Jamal, the son of the president who is seen as being prepared to succeed his father in the presidential elections in 2011.

Mubarak won at a rate of 88.5% of the votes in the elections which took place on Wednesday and only 23% of the eligible voters took part, according to official figures. However, Ibn Khaldoun center which is supervised by human rights activist Saad Eddine Ibrahim estimated the rate of participation at 18%.

A spokesman for Kefayah said that in a real multi candidate elections, no one can win by the rate of 88%.

Several legal organizations say that great violations took place in the election process despite judges supervision on many of its committees. Al-Wafd party whose candidate Nuuman Jumaa came third complained against these violations.

The chairman of the al-Ghad party and its candidate for the presidential elections Ayman Nour doubted the results of the elections and said they violate "reality" and called for repeating the elections.

Meantime, one legal organization said that the rate of falsification ranged between 10 to 15%, but that this would not affect the legitimacy of the election of the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

The Egyptian President is due to take his constitutional oath on September 27th in a joint session for the al-Shaab and the Shoura council, and he delivered a statement on Sunday upon receiving the representatives of the two councils members in the ruling national party in which he expected to specify a program to execute promises he gave during his elections campaign including accelerating political reform steps.
