Egypt-Lebanon, Politics, 9/10/2005
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora hailed efforts exerted by President Hosni Mubarak in support of the Lebanese government and people for rebuilding modern Lebanon.
This came during a meeting Siniora held on Thursday with members of the Egyptian-Lebanese businessmen's association.
Seniora said the Egyptian-Lebanese joint committee will meet in Beirut under chairmanship of the two countries' premiers to draw up plans of trade and investment cooperation between the two states during the coming stage.
He said an agreement was reached with Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif to activate Egyptian-Lebanese economic cooperation, especially in the fields of oil refining, gas and energy.
The Lebanese official stressed the importance of lifting all restrictions on visas for the Egyptian businessmen entering Lebanon.
President Hosni Mubarak Thursday held talks with Lebanese premier. The talks dealt with Lebanon's latest developments, the situation in the area and bilateral relations.
President Mubarak showed unlimited support for Lebanon, government and people in their efforts for more stability and to enhance relations with Egypt, the Lebanese premier said.
Seniora, on his meeting with Nazif, and a number of ministers, said they tackled ways to step up cooperation in the different domains and to remove obstacles hindering such cooperation, especially in the field of trade. Lebanon's imports of Egyptian energy and natural gas were also considered, he added.
Nazif, on his part, welcomed the Lebanese premier's visit to Egypt. He said President Mubarak's directives during the talks were "clear and decisive" in terms of the necessity of extending spheres of cooperation between Lebanon and Egypt to the utmost.
He also stressed giving Lebanon all possible support in the various domains so as to realize the aspirations of the Egyptian and Lebanese peoples in the coming phase.
Nazif explained that the Lebanese and Egyptian sides agreed on a number of issues topped by the economic field.
He said the two sides agreed on integration in implementing energy projects within the context of the Arab natural gas pipeline.
Studies are being prepared to provide Lebanon with all its energy needs, he said.
Also, the issue of a power grid linkage was raised during the meeting, he added.
Nazif also said the two sides agreed to hold a meeting of the joint committee in Beirut in the coming weeks.
