Speaker rebuffs unilateral sanctions on syria
Syria-USA, Politics, 9/10/2005

People's Assembly in Syria has denounced overnight unilateral sanctions against Syria imposed by, "certain countries on many other states among them is Syria."

"These sanctions are against the simplest form of civilized dealing that is based on the respect of the other, the international law principals and the UN charter," Speaker Mahmoud al-Abrash said in a speech at the second international parliamentary conferee in New York.

He warned that these sanctions "would affect development plans and the process of social, and economic reform in countries exposed to them."

Meantime, Al-Abrash underlined that Syria was believing in significance of international peace and security and the need to peacefully solve conflicts.

"Here comes Syria's permanent keenness and its political decisions based on these principals in her foreign policy and in her ties with other states," he said noting that Syria was building the closest ties with states and peoples as well international organizations on the basis of mutual respect, and the respect of the people's right of self-determination as well as depending on dialogue as means of organizing international ties.

He renewed Syria's condemnation of the international terror due to its being a "dangerous plague," and said "facing this disease will not be effective unless it is based on a comprehensive international cooperation and in light of the international legitimacy and the respect of the human international law."

He called to handle "the virus of international terror" by defining it and distinguish between it and people's right of resistance. He also underlined importance of freeing the Middle East from weapons of mass destruction reminding of Syria's initiative to the UN Security Council in this respect which was "halted by certain countries to safeguard Israel's interests."

Al-Abrash criticized the state of weakness of the international organization started to suffer from, saying it was a "determinate result" because of some countries negligence of it and its resolutions, as well due to the double standards criterion and selectivity in implementing resolutions related to the Middle East in a way that does not make Israel angry.
