Abu Zeid: Protcol enhances irrigation upgrades
Egypt, Economics, 9/8/2005
A protocol to enhance the renovation of barrages, dams and general irrigation equipment was signed yesterday between the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation and the Arab Industrialization Organization (AIC).
Both sides also agreed to cooperate in providing training for the technical personnel that will undertake the operation and the maintenance of giant pumping stations similar to the one at Toshka.
Minister Mahmoud Abu Zeid signed the protocol with AlO Chairman Magdi Hatata who said that they had much to offer to Egypt's development.
He noted that the Protocol would provide a marked boost to the two parties cooperation.
Abu Zeid highlighted that an ambitious World Bank financed program for developing Egypt's irrigation system is currently in operation and covers 250,000 feddans (259,500 acres) annually.
He added that the total cost of equipment used in Egypt's irrigation projects would reach LE12 billion by 2017.
