Mubarak faces two rivals in elections
Egypt, Politics, 9/7/2005
The Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, 77 years old, seeks to assume a fifth term of office of 6 years period in the elections to be held today, following a constitutional amendment to permit multiple candidates instead of the referendum over one candidate chosen by the parliament as used to happen in the past.
Mubarak has been facing nine rivals, mainly two liberals. They are Ayman Nour the chairman of al-Ghad party and Nuuman Jumaa the chairman of al-Wafd party. Some 32 million Egyptians are eligible to vote in the elections. However, the turnout to take part in earlier elections was very weak and numerous evidence were stated on violations.
The Muslim Brothers group, the largest opposition group in Egypt was prevented from proposing a candidate because of what was described by critics as the deliberate restricting of conditions on whom can join the elections from outside members of legally recognized parties.
32 million Egyptians eligible to vote will head for ballot centers today.
