Supervising elections conflict in Egypt
Egypt, Politics, 9/7/2005
Hours before the launching of the first multi candidate presidential elections in Egypt, the administrative judiciary court said that judges, alienated by the presidential elections committee from supervising the voting operations, had the right to supervise.
The court said that the presidential elections committee does not have authority to delegate or remove judges from supervising the elections, especially that the Egyptian constitution and the presidential elections law did not give the committee authority in this matter, and that delegating the judges is decided by their affiliated high judicial commissions.
The sentence also said that the presidential elections committee "exceeded the boundary of its authority set to it according to the law and the constitution and its authority is confined to form committees, and define them.
For his part, the Egyptian prime minister Ahmad Nazif said in a press conference on Tuesday that the elections committee is presided over by the chairman of the constitutional committee in Egypt, which is an authority much higher than an administrative court, and therefore the election commision is not obliged to the administrative court decision, legally.
