Saudi Arabia, Politics, 9/7/2005

Saudi Arabia has called the UN General Assembly which convenes its meeting this month to to adopt a proposal by Saudi Arabia for founding an international center to what is called the fighting of terrorism.

The Saudi news agency quoted the Saudi foreign minister prince Saud al-Faisal as saying that the big challenge which faces the next meeting is reflected in the terrorism phenomenon which he said has become a great threat for many countries and to world peace and security, and obstructs the pace of progress.

He added that the kingdom proposed the formation of a team of experts working for defining necessary measures to adopt the proposal, which was proposed by King Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz in February, and drawing plans under the disposal of the UN General Assembly in its next session.

The minister stressed the need for taking "a strong and firm position" concerning the question of fighting terrorism during the next session of the UN General Assembly.

Saudi Arabia has hosted an international conference on fighting terrorism in February this year with the participation of more than 50 countries at the level of experts and specialists in addition to 8 regional and international organizations including the United Nations.
