Syrian agent provides Mehlis new information on Hariri assassination
Syria-Lebanon, Politics, 9/7/2005

The "intelligence on line" internet news site specialized in intelligence affairs reported that the investigation of the assassination of Rafiq al-Hariri achieved progress following a high ranking Syrian military official defection from his country, where he disclosed information to Detlev Mehlis, the chairman of the UN investigation committee to the assassination of Hariri.

The report quoted diplomatic sources in Beirut saying that Muhammad Safi, the director of the former Syrian military intelligence official Lt. Gen. Hassan Khalil, fled from Syria to saudi Arabia and gave information to the Saudi intelligence and through the Saudis to the Americans about the explosives used in the assasination of al-Hariri.

The report said that the renegade Safi disclosed information on the kind of explosives used in killing Hariri and that these were brought from a Slovak company.
