Saddam's trial to be limited to al-Dajil incident
Iraq, Politics, 9/5/2005

The spokesman for the Iraiq government Leith Kebbe has not ruled out that the toppled Iraqi President Saddam Hussein will only be tried over his role in al-Dajil case which goes back to 1982 and to receive death penalty, waiting not for other sessions in other cases he is accused of, if the higher council for justice and the presidential council ratify the sentence against him.

Kebbe said that "accusations addressed to Saddam Hussein are so numerous, that trials against him will not end as long as he is alive." Kebbe did not specify the time this trial which starts on October 19 will take. Saddam Hussein and 8 of his aides will be brought to trial on charges of killing 143 Shiite in al-Dajil village in north Baghdad in 1982 following a failed assassination attempt targeted his procession in addition to seizing 399 families and demolishing houses and leveling lands.

Kebbe attributed the reason behind the announcement of the government for the date of starting the trial because there was not a spokesman on behalf of the special Iraqi court.

Saddam's aides who will be brought for trial with him are: Barazan Ibrahim al-Hassan half brother for Saddam, Taha Yassin Ramadan, the former Iraqi vice President and Awad Hamad al-Bander the deputy chairman for Saddam's former presidential court, Abdullah Kazem al-Rweid, Muzhir Abdullah al-Rweid, Ali Dayeh Ali and Muhammad Azzam al-Ali.

Death penalty was abrogated after the invasion of Iraq in 2003 but the Iraqi authorities reactivated it one again recently. Its first implementation targeted three Iraqis who were strangled four days ago on charges of killing, kidnapping and rape.

Chairman of the defense team for the toppled Iraqi President, Hussein Khalil al-Duleimi, considered that the date set for Saddam's trial is inappropriate, stressing that he needs years to study the 36 tons of documents which constitute the file of his client.

Abdul Haq Allani, the legal advisor and official spokesman for Raghad, the daughter of the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, indicated that a new international team including American, European, Asian and Arab prominent lawyers were chosen to ensures a strong defense. He said that this team will question the legality of the court and the legality of measures which deprives the President from a just trial.
