Fightings in Tel-Afer, Iraq
Iraq, Military, 9/5/2005
The American and Iraqi forces called on the civilians in the outskirts of Tel-Afer, west of Musil, to leave their houses in precaution to a major military operation in the city, at a time when fighting continued and the number of victims was not known.
The clashes took place late Saturday evening in the western part of the city. Reports talked about the killing of 57 armed men in house-to-house clashes and bombardment by US Apache plane.
The American forces were able to control the city in Autumn last year before it withdrew from it, leaving behind an Iraqi force and some 500 American soldiers, but the gunmen gradually restored back their force.
One Iraqi police man was killed and two others injured in a booby trapped car explosion led by one suicide bomber near one inspection point in Alexandria city south of Baghdad. Three contractors with the US army were kidnapped while they were leaving al-Taji air base, according to a police source.
At least 24 Iraqis were killed on Saturday in several attacks, most of them are from the security forces, where in one violent attack targeted inspection points near Tel-Afer city in the northwest Baghdad and claimed the life of 17 Iraqi soldiers and policemen.
