Sudanese FM praises Egypt's role in stabilizing Sudan

Sudanese Foreign Minister, Mostafa Othman Ismail, said on Friday that Sudanese First Vice-President Salva Kiir's visit to Cairo on Thursday was an affirmation of the major role played by Egypt in the stability and development process in Sudan.

In statements to the Egyptian TV, Ismail said Kiir's visit also aimed at maintaining the good relationship Kiir's predecessor, late John Garang, had established with the Egyptian leadership. He added that Kiir was following the footsteps of Garang.

He said Egypt is a pivotal country in the area and south Sudan needs development and reconstruction and subsequently Kiir's visit aimed at urging the rest of the Arab states reconstruction of Sudan.

On the outcome of Kiir's visit, Ismail said Kiir was acquainted with the Egyptian leadership and vice versa. He added President Hosni Mubarak got acquainted during his meeting with Kiir with priorities of the coming stage and what Sudan needed.

In other statements, Ismail said Egypt has expressed full support for the peace process in Sudan.

President Mubarak stressed during his meeting with Kiir that Egypt's efforts in this respect would continue, Ismail added.

President Mubarak invited Kiir to visit Egypt again and meet with Egyptian businessmen, investors and ministers, he said.

Kiir expressed thanks and appreciation to the Egyptian government for its heart-felt condolences over the death of former Sudanese vice president John Garang and for its efforts as regards the peace process, he said.
