Egyptian initiative to combat terror
Egypt-UN, Politics, 9/3/2005

Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit has sent a message to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan indicating that Egypt will present an initiative on combating terror during the 60th UNGA meeting to open this month in September.

The initiative calls for holding a special UNGA session to discuss coordinating international efforts to counter terrorism through a working plan under the UN umbrella.

The plan includes several important elements which flesh out the Egyptian concept on combating terror atop of which is the possibility of setting up a new UN mechanism to unravel reasons behind the phenomenon and means of dealing with it, according to a diplomatic source. The proposals come within efforts Egypt has been exerting since 1986 to fight terror.
