Yediot Ahronot: Trade-diplomatic Israeli representation in Dubai
United Arab Emirates-Israel, Politics, 9/3/2005

The Israeli Yediot Ahronot reported Friday that Israel had opened, recently in secret, a trade-diplomatic representation in Dubai of the United Arab Emirates UAE.

The paper explained that the representation which includes several diplomats, is working secretly because of conditions imposed by the local authorities on it. The paper added that the opening of the representation was preceded by secret contacts with Dubai that lasted for more than one year, during which for several times, senior officials at the Israeli foreign ministry visited Dubai and held talks with its senior high ranking local officials.

On top of two of these Israeli delegations which visited Dubai by the beginning of this year was the deputy director general of the Israeli foreign ministry for administrative affairs Nasim Bin Shatrit and the ministry's legal advisor Ehud Kenan who ran talks on an agreement to establish diplomatic relations between the two sides.

Yediot Ahronot said that part of the diamonds which is sold in Dubai is from Israel.

The Israeli foreign minister Silvan Shalom did not deny the news saying "I prefer to discuss matters we make in an open way." However, one official in the Israeli foreign ministry said that there are two or three Israelis in Dubai at the meantime. He refused to give more information about the representation under the pretext of security fears.
